Life coaching is an old concept in the west, mostly among non-Muslims, but now Sheikh Muhammad Alshareef, the founder of “AlMaghrib”; An Islamic Educational Institute, has introduced life coaching customized to Muslims. So, what is Life Coaching?

According to Wikipedia, the definition of Life coaching is; “ a practice with the aim of helping clients determine and achieve personal goals. Life coaches use multiple methods that will help clients with the process of setting and reaching goals. Coaching is not targeted at psychological illness, and coaches are neither therapists nor consultants”.

Many people think of counseling when Life Coaching is mentioned. Counseling is based on past events i.e. what happened to you and how to deal with it. On the other hand, Life Coaching is future focused i.e. what are you goals? What do you want to achieve? How would you solve your problem? What actions do you need to take to solve problem? Some people might think of a Life Coach as a mentor, but a mentor is someone who is already experienced in your field. A Life Coach does not have to be experienced in your field at all. Mentorship is leading you from the front, as they show you and tell you what to do and how to do it. A Life Coach leads from behind, probes you with questions, makes you think and prompts you to come up with solutions.

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) Said, “Allah has commanded that everything (one does) they should do it with excellence (Ihsan)…..”-Sahih Muslim. As a Muslim, you are supposed to do everything with excellence, and Life coaching helps you accomplish that. I recently attended Sheikh Muhammad Alshareef’s Life Coaching Certification seminar in Toronto, Canada. It was the best thing that ever happened to me! It was worth every penny and worth every minute I spent there. Some of the things that I accomplished using Life Coaching tools so far are; I am more regular in my Salahs in the Masjid. I am more involved in local Dawa projects. I am exercising regularly. I am much more organized, and accomplish more results in less amount of time.

Here is another example of a sister who benefited from Life Coaching. The sister had a goal to memorize the thirtieth Juz of Qur’an during the summer (4 months). After having only one free session with one of the female Life Coaches, she memorized the whole Juz in just one week! This is the benefit of Life Coaching. Even our teacher Sheikh Muhammad Alshreef accomplished the huge success in establishing “AlMaghrib” and making it an international organization with the assistance of a Life Coach. Now he has established “DiscoverU Life”; an educational institute that holds work shops and seminars in Goal Setting, Time Management, Life Coaching Certification and other self development programs. The point is that no one is perfect. Everyone needs that little push. Just imagine if every Muslim could get that push to help them get rid of their problems, gain clarity in their goals and take positive action to accomplish their goals, what kind of Ummah could we become?

“In Mark McCormack’s book; “What They Don’t teach you at Harvard Business School”, he tells of a study conducted amongst Harvard MBA students between 1979-1989. In 1979 the students of Harvard MBA class were asked, “Have you set clear written goals for your future and the plan to achieve it?” Only 3% had clear written goals and plans to achieve it, 13% had goals but their goals were not in writing and the remaining 84% had no goals at all, except for getting out of school and enjoying the summer. In 1989 they interviewed the members of that class again. They found that the 13% who had goals but not in writing, were on average earning twice as much as 84% who had no goals at all, but more surprisingly the 3% which had clear written goals were making as much as 10 times as the other 97% altogether.”
(Source: “Goals! How to Get Everything You Want-Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible by Brian Tracy 2003). This study is a strong indication of the power of having clarity of the goals, writing down a plan to achieve them.

Life coaching takes you from Point A to point B by helping you come up with bigger, clearer goals. Your Life Coach holds you accountable and makes sure that you take the necessary actions to reach your goals. With a life coach on your back, you will not be able to procrastinate. You can make your ideas into realities. It does not matter how unrealistic these ideas and goals are. Some of the examples of goals you could accomplish using Life Coaching are:
· Having clarity in your career and what you want to do in your life
· Be able to start new business and get out of the rat race
· Be financially free to have more money and more time for your self and your family
· Be able to have better relationship with your parents, your spouse, your children etc
· Be a better practicing Muslim
· Most importantly; Attain Jannah Firdaws (Best Paradise)

We have been talking about goals so far. Now let me share with you the most important tool to achieve your goals. Making Du’a! The most important tool towards achieving your goals is to make Du’a (supplication) to Allah (SWT). The power of Du’a can even change Qadr (destiny). Now close your eyes, take two minutes to think about all the things you want in your life, regarding your health, education, family, business/career or education, finances (Jannah and the protection from hell fire has to be there somewhere). Once you have a clear picture of these goals in your mind, write down everything you thought about. Now pick the top six goals out of your list. Rearrange your goals list in an order from most important to least important. Now, start to make du’a for all your goals after praying Salah, reading Quran while driving, between adhan and salah and other most dua accepting times.
